Q

Is pilates good for pregnancy?

Yes! Pilates is an excellent way to move your body during pregnancy!

At Umoya we safely exercise throughout your pregnancy to prepare your body and mind for the marathon ahead.

The focus on correct breathing is not only beneficial during labour but also assists in recovery post pregnancy.

Some studies even show that Pilates can reduce the length of your labour and reduce pain in childbirth!

Q

When should I start prenatal Pilates?

You can start any time!

Depending on your previous level of fitness and (even more importantly) how you're feeling, we recommend coming from 12 weeks. Most women can maintain their previous exercise routine until approximately this point.

Some women feel better as they enter the 2nd trimester, this is also the point when hormones and the bump tend come into full bloom.

Q

Is yoga or pilates better for pregnancy?

Pilates has a strong focus on strengthening and toning the muscles of the pelvic floor and deep abdominals which is not only essential in birth but also in your recovery.

In order to do this we need to breathe correctly.

The breathing techniques used in Pilates has a meditative effect.

Yoga's  focus is on relaxation and stretching which can also feel wonderful in pregnancy.

At Umoya we have a specially designed program to assist in easing the discomforts of pregnancy and facilitate labour.

Mama Toto is a South African term which directly translates into Mother - Baby. The idea that the mother and baby are intertwined.

MamaToto is the name of our Prenatal Pilates Classes which consists of 1 hour of breathwork and specifically designed Pilates movements to help you connect your mind to your body and to your baby. To support a safe and empowering first step into motherhood.

Q

What is mamatoto?

Amandla Mama is our 8 week birth education course in which we spend 45 minutes learning and discussing all things pregnancy, birth and after baby; and another 45 minutes in a blissful Pilates movement program.

AMANDLA translates to Power, Strength, Competence. It is a South African rallying cry of revolution. Perfect to describe the empowering feeling of stepping into motherhood in your power.

Q

WHAT IS AMANDLA MAMA?

As a pregnant person your regular Pilates workout will not be good enough any more.

You are a marvel, a unicorn, a Goddess and you deserve to be treated as such.

Often pregnant women get relegated to the back of the class, end up doing the same variations over and over again or have to wait for an exercise they can participate in.

Prenatal Pilates specifically focusses on the muscles that will be used through childbirth, that stretch or  get tight during pregnancy as well as prepare you for life with baby.

Marie Louise

"It was a place where I felt safe, connected, educated, respected and sore (good sore lol)! The knowledge that Faye holds about birth, and the body gave me exceptional confidence that I could continue to train right up until my last weeks before birth. I was able to be educated (and reminded) about the processes of labour as well as staying physically fit so that I could endure the most empowering birth I didn't know I was going to have yet."
